The Vital Importance of Fearing God
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." - Proverbs 9:10
A healthy fear of God is not about living in constant terror but rather about understanding and acknowledging His awe-inspiring, holy nature. It is recognizing that God is beyond our comprehension, and this awareness profoundly impacts your life in ways you may not even realize.
Proverbs 9:10 provides a foundational insight into the importance of fearing the Lord: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." This verse underscores that a reverent fear of God is the starting point of true wisdom and understanding.
A healthy fear of God encourages humility. When you grasp the vastness of God's majesty and holiness, it humbles you before Him. It's the realization that you are but a finite being in the presence of the infinite. This humility is a crucial component of a healthy, reverent relationship with God.
Fearing God promotes obedience. It's the understanding that God's commands are not optional but essential for living in alignment with His will. Proverbs 8:13 states, "To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech." Your fear of God leads you to turn away from sin and walk in righteousness.
A healthy fear of God nurtures a deeper intimacy with Him. Paradoxically, fearing God draws you closer to Him. It's the recognition that you need His grace, guidance, and presence in your life. Psalm 25:14 assures, "The Lord confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them."
A reverent fear of God impacts your decision-making. It prompts you to seek God's wisdom and guidance in every aspect of your life. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages you to trust in the Lord with all your heart, leaning not on your understanding but acknowledging Him in all your ways.
A healthy fear of God is not about living in constant dread but about embracing the profound reality of His holiness and majesty. It deepens your humility, obedience, intimacy, and wisdom. It guides your choices and decisions, aligning them with God's will. As you nurture this fear of the Lord, you'll find that it enriches your relationship with Him and leads you to a life marked by wisdom, understanding, and true reverence.

This is a great devotional with an explanation on fearing God. Most people tend to think of the aforementioned fear of terror but I love how it's phrased "...but we are finite being" in the presence of His infinite love & mercy. Thank you Lord for your favor & grace upon us, upon me. May people draw & continue to draw nearer to you & see k your guidance in our lives; to receive what you have in store for us. Amen
Fear works. It keeps us safe. It helps us comply. All of that was very well said. Connecting intimacy and fear needs a better explanation.
