Putting Others First

"Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others." - Philippians 2:3-4

Selflessness isn’t always easy. Our natural tendency is to think about our own needs, desires, and goals. But God calls us to a different way of living—one that puts others first. This command isn’t just about grand gestures or heroic sacrifices; it’s about daily acts of humility and kindness.

When Paul wrote to the Philippians, he emphasized the importance of humility and valuing others. This isn’t about thinking less of ourselves but thinking of ourselves less. It’s about recognizing the needs and worth of those around us and acting in ways that honor them.
How can we live this out in our day-to-day lives?

First, start with small acts of kindness. Hold the door open for someone, let another car merge in traffic, or offer a smile and a kind word to a stranger. These actions may seem insignificant, but they create a ripple effect of positivity and show that you value others.

Second, listen more than you speak. In our fast-paced world, genuine listening is a rare gift. When you take the time to listen, you show that you care about what others have to say. This can strengthen relationships and build a sense of community.

Third, be willing to lend a hand. Whether it’s helping a neighbor with their groceries or volunteering at a local charity, your actions demonstrate your commitment to serving others. Remember, Jesus washed His disciples' feet to teach them the value of serving one another.

Lastly, pray for others. Prayer is a powerful way to support those around you. When you pray for others, you’re actively seeking God’s best for them, which is a profound act of selflessness.

Living selflessly doesn’t mean neglecting your own needs. It’s about finding a balance where you can care for yourself while also caring deeply for others. As you practice selflessness, you’ll find that it brings a deeper sense of fulfillment and joy. God’s command to put others first isn’t a burden; it’s a path to a richer, more meaningful life.
