Servant Leadership
"For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."- Mark 10:45
We have the tendency to often equate leadership with power, authority, and prestige. The concept of leading as a servant is rarely the first thing that comes to mind. Yet, this is the example that Jesus gave us during His time on earth—a model of servant leadership that turns the world's notion of leadership upside down.
As followers of Christ, we are called to emulate His example in every aspect of our lives, including our roles as leaders. Instead of seeking to be served, Jesus came to serve, demonstrating a radical form of leadership characterized by humility, selflessness, and sacrificial love.
The idea of leading as a servant goes against the picture that many have of a leader. In our culture, leaders are often depicted as strong, assertive, and in control. However, Jesus challenges this perception by showing us that true greatness is found in serving others, not in being served.
Servant leadership is not about lording over others or exerting dominance; it's about putting the needs of others above our own and using our positions of influence to uplift and empower those around us. It's about leading by example and showing humility, compassion, and kindness in all that we do.
Jesus Himself demonstrated this servant leadership model throughout His ministry. He washed His disciples' feet, healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ultimately gave His life as a ransom for many. He showed us that true leadership is about selflessly pouring out our lives for the sake of others, just as He did for us.
As leaders, whether in our families, workplaces, communities, or churches, we are called to follow Jesus' example of servant leadership. This means actively seeking opportunities to serve others, listening to their needs, and walking alongside them in their journey.
Whenever you find yourself in a leadership position, I want to encourage you to embrace the model of servant leadership that Jesus has given us. Seek to serve others with humility, love, and compassion, knowing that true greatness is found not in being served, but in serving others, just as Jesus did during His time here on earth.
