How Helping Others Changes Us
"The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor." - Proverbs 22:9
When we step out to help others, God often works in our hearts as much as He works in the lives of those we’re helping. We see this transformative process often during mission trips. While we go with the intention of serving and blessing those in need, we often find that we are the ones who come back changed.
On a mission trip, you might travel to a place where the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs are overwhelming. You go with a heart full of compassion, ready to serve in any way possible. Whether it’s building homes, providing medical care, teaching children, or simply offering a smile and a listening ear, your actions are a response to God’s call to love your neighbor.
In the process, you see firsthand the struggles and hardships others face, which can put your own life into perspective. You begin to appreciate the blessings in your life and realize how much you take for granted. God uses these experiences to humble you, to teach you empathy and gratitude, and to deepen your faith.
God also stretches your comfort zone. Serving in unfamiliar environments pushes you to rely on Him more fully. You learn to trust in His provision and guidance in ways you might not have experienced before. This increased dependence on God strengthens your relationship with Him and helps you grow spiritually.
The relationships you build while serving others often leave a lasting impact. You experience the beauty of community and the joy of seeing God’s love in action. These connections remind you that we are all part of the body of Christ, called to support and uplift one another.
As you continue to help others, be open to the ways God wants to change you. Allow Him to work in your heart, shaping you to be more like Jesus. Remember, when we help others, it’s not just about what we can do for them, but also about what God wants to do in us. Embrace the transformation, and let God use your acts of service to bless you and those around you in significant ways.
