Not Deserved
“Then Peter came up and said to Him, ‘Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven.’” - Matthew 6:14-15
When someone has done you wrong, are you quick to forgive? Or do you let anger build inside you? Do you make a case against that person as to why they should not be forgiven, and just continue to let your frustration build because in your mind, “they deserve it”?
If that is what you are thinking, I am here to tell you...you are right. They DO deserve it. But you know what? So do you. We all deserve it because we all have messed up. The Bible says that we are all sinners. We all fall short of the standard and law God gave us.
We all sin against the law, and we all sin against our brothers and sisters. We are human beings, and sin is our nature. This is by no means an excuse. It is just the fact of the matter. Thankfully for us as believers, Jesus is not keeping a tally of rights and wrongs. Otherwise, we would be in serious trouble.
But if Jesus isn’t keeping a tally, why are you? Jesus is perfect. He never sinned. He came to earth, lived 33 years, was tempted just like you and me, and He never batted an eye. He’s blameless. He's sinless. He is perfect. And yet, He keeps no records of right and wrongs.
So then, who are you and I to keep the tally of another man or woman? Should we not forgive others just as Christ has forgiven us? Peter asks about this in the book of Matthew.
Matthew 6:14-15 says, “Then Peter came up and said to Him, ‘Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven.’”
Listen, my friend, I’m not saying they deserve to be forgiven. They don’t. But neither did we. And yet, Jesus has forgiven us anyway, and He wants us to do the same. Who do you need to forgive today?
