A Selfless Love

“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” - John 15:13

I want you to stop and think about the people you love most in this world. It might be your husband or wife. It might be a mother or grandmother. It might be a close friend or sibling. Whoever it is, think about the person or people who mean the most to you.

Now I want to ask you a question: to what depths would you go for them? See, many people will talk a big game about their love for someone. “Oh, I love her so much, she has no idea.” or “He means the world to me, the things I would do for that man.”

But when it really boils down to it, they actually wouldn’t choose that person over their own interests or well-being. And these are the people we say we love the MOST. It’s easy to talk about it, but very few actually live it.

Yet, that is exactly what God has called us to do. But He hasn’t just called us, He first demonstrated it. John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

God didn’t just talk the talk; He walked the walk. He sent His own Son to die for you and me. There is no greater love than this. He says it in His Word, but He actually demonstrated it. It wasn’t just lip service.

What about you? Is your love just a bunch of lip service or do you actually love the way Jesus did, selflessly? God has called us to love others more than ourselves. If we want to truly love others the way God loved us, we should put them before ourselves.

God said there is no greater love than to lay one life’s down, but we aren’t even asking that. I’m just asking if you let them eat before you…if you sacrifice your time for something they want to do..or if you are there for them even when it isn’t convenient for you.

Do you love selflessly? Or only for what you get in return? It’s a great question to consider. If you don’t know, ask God to reveal how you love others.
